Dr Perera’s Rating:
Following up on The Checklist Manifesto, in Being Mortal, Atul Gawande explores paternalism in another New York Times Bestseller. The topic is viewed through the lens he saw his own patients when they were approaching the end of their lives. It is beautifully woven with the story of his own father who was himself a surgeon, now facing an end-of-life crisis. He reflects on his own cultural roots that go back to India and explores the various ways in which we look at life and death. The book is drawn to a close with the narrative of his father’s life.
