Dr Perera’s Rating:
This book is about a fictional character, 47-year-old Jonathan Brewster. As Dr Khadra himself explains, it is a composite of different patients he has seen in his own practice. He does weave into the narrative some of his own personal experiences when he was a patient himself.
While one may be critical of his writing which paints a dark picture of those in healthcare field, one cannot ignore the fact that as doctors working with the various stresses and strains especially in a busy public sector and in an age of technological advancements we may miss the essential human nature of the person in front of us.
It is in this context that this book should be read rather than looking at it as a damning indictment of people involved in health services.
